Important Swartz Creek Dates

"The 1900's"

1906  -  Post Office moves to the old hotel annex on the south side of Miller Rd.

1907  -  John Lawrence brought the telephone into the village and Nellie Fuller operated it in her back room.

1910  -  Methodist Church hit by lightning and burned.

1910  -  Approximate date that the Czechoslovakian families began to arrive in Swartz Creek.

1912  -  First Catholic Church built on the south side of Miller Rd., east of First St.

1917  -  First Masonic Temple built on south side on Miller RD.

1917  -  First World War began to last until 1919.

1919  -  Land given by the Crapo's for Catholic cemetery at end of Crapo St.

1925  -  Towns people organize the Swartz Creek Community Fire Association.

1927  -  Consumer Power brought electricity to Swartz Creek

1927  -  Friendship Club began to unite the families.

1927  -  Friendship Club began to unite the Czechoslovakian families.

1928  -  First K-12 school built in Swartz Creek School District called Mary Crapo.

1936  -  Post Office moves into west end of old hotel.

1941  -  Second World War begins and ends with the atomic bomb in 1945.

1944  -  Swartz Creek community unites by forming a community council.

1947  -  Swartz Creek Agricultural School consolidates with 10 rural schools.

1948  -  Begole school district annexed into Swartz Creek.

1952  -  The Swartz Creek Community Fire Association was forced to dissolve and then reverted to the ownership of Gaines-Clayton Townships.

1953  -  Second bank building opens on corner of Miller Rd. and what is now Fortino Dr.

1955  -  William Crapo sold Crapo Farm to Winshall Corporation and North American Development for Winchester Village.

1957  -  Chevrolet builds a large parts plant in Otterburn, later to become General Motors Parts Division.

1957  -  Swartz Creek builds new high school building to house grades 9-10.

1959  -  Adoption of city charter with the vote to become a home-ruled government.

1959  -  First Police Department organized.

1959  -  Post Office moves to Lovegrove Building and first city delivery begins.

1960  -  Expressway I-69 opens taking direct route west, out of city of Swartz Creek.

1961  -  Local railway depot closes.

1962  -  Last mail train makes last stop in Swartz Creek.

1964  -  Present city offices bought from Nazarene Church located on First St.

1966  -  Swartz Creek City begins putting sewers throughout the city area.

1973  -  Swartz Creek began putting curbs and gutters throughout city area.

1975  -  Morrish Rd. extension built creating Holland Dr.

1976  -  Bicentennial Projects sponsored by City Council was restoring the Miller-Holland house and the history of the Swartz Creek area.
