Important Swartz Creek Dates

"The Beginnings"

1635  -  First white men (Frenchmen) came into Michigan Area.

1819  -  Saginaw Valley Treaty with the Chippewa Indians.

1835  -  Chief Kawgogezhic bought land in Mundy-Gaines Townships.

1836  -  First wave of settlers came into this area and called it Miller Settlement.

1836  -  Flint Township organized.

1837  -  Mundy Township organized.

1840  -  First log cabin school built on the south side of Miller Rd.

1841  -  Land given by Millers for Swartz Creek cemetery, Morrish Rd.

1841  -  A frame building built by subscription for church and school near the corner  of Morrish and Miller Rds.

1842  -  Land given for Indian cemetery between Seymour and VanVleet Rds.

1842  -  Gaines Township organized.

1842  -  A post office/mail route was established & given the name of Swartz Creek.

1844  -  Clayton Township organized.

1853  -  Henry Wilcox builds first red school, southwest corner of Miller Rd. and Holland Dr.

1860  -  Henry Howland Crapo bought 1,000 acres of swamp land to develop into a model farm.

1861  -  The Civil War raged over the United States to end in 1865.

1863  -  The first Methodist Church is built on Morrish Rd.

1865  -  Henry Howland Crapo is elected Governor of Michigan.

1873  -  First established post office outside a home on the site of the first bank.

1876  -  Grand Trunk Railroad completed through Swartz Creek and depot called Hamilton for a short time.

1877  -  The Swartz Creek Elevator was built.

1877  -  The Village was first plotted.

1884  -  An era ends with the death of Chief Wabaness - David Fisher.

1891  -  Red brick school built on Morrish Rd. for grades 1-10 (Friendship Club)

1898  -  The Spanish American war begins.
